I WANNA BE, JACKIE ONASSIS, I WANNA WEAR A PAIR OF DARK SUNGLASSES, I WANNA BE, JACKIE OH-OH-OH-OH PLEASE DON’T DIE!
I haven’t listened to Rage Against the Machine for quite some time (I haven’t been 16 for some 7 years now - scary thought) in fact I’ve grown to pretty much detest a lot of what they stand for and was mightily disappointed (or just, you know, grown up) when I saw them live (twice). It may surprise you though that I still have a favourite RATM song, and still think Evil Empire was actually a pretty decent (and very underrated, but hey, we are talking “Rage” fans) record. Tire Me is a surprisingly well put out together punk song, and pretty much explains their later Minor Threat cover. What I really like about this track is that Tom Morello’s intensely annoying show-boating is kept to a minimum and he shows he can actually be a decent guitarist when he wants (see also the final breakdown of Bullet in the Head), the also reasonably underated and generally unnoticed rhythm section that even this band seemed too often to forget it had, and Zach de La Rocha has a surprisingly, genuinely quite thrilling turn (rather than that incredibly unimaginative rapper-followed-by-easily-digestible-vaguely-angry-chorus) exemplified by the quote that headlines this piece.
